In 1870, the home was much more simple, but was purchased and redesigned by Thomas Jefferson Southard, a prominent shipbuilder in 1888. Throughout the years many careful restoration projects have taken place, so that many of the rooms are period-correct. Features include 11′ high, beautiful painted tin ceilings, hardwood flooring including original parquet-style joinery, and an awesome observation tower with panoramic views of Richmond and the Kennebec River. This special home has many potential uses, both residential and commercial. Attached to the main house there is a finished, restored carriage house, which most recently was a museum display area.
